Why Story Points Fail as a Communication Tool

Why are story points a bad metric?

Story points are a non-convertible currency with no standard exchange rate. They depend on team composition and individual seniority, so a 5-pointer for one team is a 2-pointer for another. You can't use them to communicate with the CEO, who thinks in dollars and deadlines. They foster distrust between departments because business leaders can't validate them.

What should replace story points for planning?

Replace them with objective business metrics: time, budget, margin, risk, and growth. These are the variables the CEO is responsible for. Tech and product teams must present data in terms leadership can act on. If leadership can't act on the communication, it's not ready for the C-suite.
